About The Scientist
Short Biography
PhD Marine Ecology (1984); Doctor in Sciences (Honoris Causa) (Hull University, 2015).
Principal Investigator at AZTI (Spain) since 1989. Member of the Scientific Committee of the European Environment Agency (2013-2020).
Author of >265 papers (Hindex: 64), Specialty Chief Editor of Frontiers in Marine Science, Associated Editor of Continental Shelf Research and Journal of Sea Research, and member of the Editorial Board of Ecological Indicators, Marine Pollution Bulletin and Current Opinion in Environmental Science & Health.
Awarded with the European SETAC Environment Education Award (2017), and the Life-Time Achievement Award, by the International Conference on Benthos (Cochin, India, 2019).
Current Research Interest :
-Integrative assessment of coastal and estuarine waters (methods of assessment)
- Development of indicators for Integrated Coastal Zone Management and European Directives (including the Water Framework Directive and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive) and marine protection, for phytoplankton, macroalgae, macroinvertebrates, and fishes
- Habitat mapping and habitat suitability (benthos and fishes)
- Biodiversity and goods and services valuation
- Marine Spatial Planning (including new uses e.g. renewable energy)
- Marine and estuarine monitoring, marine pollution and quality (water, sediment, biomonitors).
- Environmental impacts at sea,
- Marine and Benthic ecology (soft- and hard-bottom).
- Marine resources exploitation and management (shellfish and fish).
- Biological oceanography: relationships between ocean-meteorological variables and marine resources
- Oceanography, meteorological and biological time series
